Approximately 35 community members joined Hockinson School District for the Hockinson Tour of Schools on October 21, getting a firsthand look at classroom learning across the district. Open to all community members, the tour included visits to Hockinson Heights Elementary School, Hockinson Middle School, and Hockinson High School. Thirty-five tour participants traveled between schools by bus to explore classrooms, learn about district priorities and gain insight into how Hockinson schools are preparing students for success.
Strong Foundations, Soaring Futures
A central focus of this year's tour was Strong Foundations, Soaring Futures, a districtwide initiative designed to help every student succeed in school and beyond. Building on last year's Upward Together initiative, Strong Foundations, Soaring Futures emphasizes research-based teaching practices and strong family partnerships in three key areas: Classrooms, Community, and Communication. By strengthening and aligning instructional practices across all schools, the district is building strong academic foundations while helping students develop the skills they need for college, careers, and life. Learn more about Strong Foundations, Soaring Futures here.
2026-27 Electronic Device Policy
Tour participants also learned about the district's new electronic device policy, which establishes grade-level expectations for personal electronic device use during the school day. At Hockinson Heights Elementary School, devices must be "off and away" throughout the entire school day. At Hockinson Middle School, devices must be off and away during instructional time and passing periods, but students may use them during lunch. At Hockinson High School, devices must be off and away during instructional time, with use permitted during passing periods and lunch. These expectations are designed to support focused learning environments while recognizing students' different developmental needs. Learn more about the device policy here.
2027-28 Grade Reconfiguration
Community members also learned about the upcoming grade configuration, which will move fifth grade from Hockinson Heights Elementary School to Hockinson Middle School. This change will help balance enrollment and relieve overcrowding at the elementary school. During their HMS visit, attendees toured the separate wing that will provide fifth graders with their own age-appropriate learning space. The tour built on a recent information night for families of current fourth graders, where district staff answered questions, gathered feedback, and shared resources to help families prepare for the transition. Community members can learn more about the upcoming change, including answers to frequently asked questions, on the district's Grade Reconfiguration resource page.
