Leak repair at HHES

The HSD is committed to maintaining our community’s investment in Hockinson’s schools. Instructional and operations staff work together to create a safe, welcoming, and positive learning environment inside and a safe and well-maintained appearance outside our schools. Today’s Spotlight on HSD Facilities article illustrates one of a number of repairs done over the winter break by the district’s 12-month maintenance and custodial staff.

The problem: A roof leak above the Conference Room in the Blue Building at Hockinson Heights Elementary School was allowing water to drip into a conference room, causing minor water damage to ceiling tiles and a portion of a wall.

The solution: According to Dave Wilson, the HSD’s Operations Supervisor, the solution actually consisted of two parts, nearly six months apart. Last spring, Wilson pinpointed what he believed was the origin of the leak and coordinated the replacement of flashing around two roof HVAC units and fan. The repair appeared to resolve the leak, but he had to wait until the return of the rainy season to be sure it was successful. Well, Wilson got the test he was looking for this rainy December. Assured that the leak had been addressed, Wilson turned his attention to cosmetic repair. He replaced ceiling tiles and textured and painted the wall.

How did Wilson feel about the way this repair turned out? “Really good,” he replied. “Leaks are notoriously difficult to track down and repair. Fortunately, we were able to get a good read on the problem and fix it, before it did any further damage.”

This project is an example of the HSD’s commitment to preventive maintenance. By addressing the issue proactively, our Maintenance Department was able to minimize damage and the scope of repair - and cost. We could not complete these timely repairs without the support of the Hockinson community; levy dollars are a critical resource that enable the HSD to stay ahead of maintenance issues.
