Student Clubs

Boy jumping over hurdles on a track

Research has shown that after school programs have a positive impact on students’ academic performance, social connectedness and college/career readiness.

If you are interested in starting a club at school, please see the office staff and we can share more about the process for starting a new club.

Students at Knowledge Bowl competing around table

Knowledge Bowl is an academic trivia tournament sport offered at Hockinson Middle School and Hockinson High School.

Boys at outdoor table wearing STEM shirts

STEM Ambassadors at Hockinson Middle School create engineering projects and blueprints that are presented each year at the Vancouver Mall and Hockinson Fun Days.

Homework club participants sitting around desks in classroom

Homework club supports students in need of additional support with homework.

Girls STEM club participants build robots

In the Girls STEM club, students complete hands-on projects like building robots.

3:16 Club

The club will be "a place to find love, and develop community, friendship, and a relationship with God". We will meet Tuesdays, from 3:30 to 4:30.

Art Club

Art club gives students a chance to practice their art skills. All are welcome.

Dungeons and Dragons Club

Our Dungeons and Dragons club is a great place to meet some new friends, learn about the game, and have a great time. Stop by for a friendly game.

Flag Team

The HMS Flag and Spirit Team is a cheer and dance club.  Participants will work together to create cheer and dance routines to be performed at HMS's home basketball games and pep assemblies.  In the spring, the team will dance with the HMS Marching Band in various local parades.

Girl's STEM

Girls STEM: Girls Who Code Module is free and open to all girls from grades 6 - 8. Girls Who Code is an international organization helping girls develop coding and problem-solving skills while building relationships. It is a great place to learn about females making a difference using technology and exploring different areas of technology yourself. We will be working with MakeBots again this year as part of our program and have added some new elements to them as well. No coding experience is required!

Homework Club

Homework club is a place where any student can come and have a quiet place to work on schoolwork. If there is a day when Homework club is not happening it will be mentioned during announcements.

Jazz Band

Please check with Mrs. Ritenburgh if you are interested in auditioning for the HMS Jazz Band.

Knowledge Bowl

Knowledge Bowl is a competitive activity in which students respond to timed verbal and written questions.  Questions range from topics such as geography, math, history, science, sports, current events, and others.  Students work in teams of four to answer the oral and written questions. During the second semester there will be an additional competition aspect where our teams will travel to compete against other schools. (students do not need to compete to join Knowledge Bowl, they can still participate)

Math Counts

MathCounts is a national middle school mathematics competition that builds problem-solving skills and fosters achievement through math contests - including a bee-type competition round. Students compete individually and as a team. This year’s regional and state competition dates are still to be determined but historically have been the last Saturday in February and the third or fourth Saturday in March.

Students who would like to participate are encouraged to also join Math Club. There will be an in-school competition to see who qualifies for Hockinson Middle School’s 4-person team.

Math Club

Math Club is open to all students grades 6-8 and is a great place to come if you enjoy math - want to get better at math - and want an opportunity to compete with other students from our region. This year we will be entering into the Math Is Cool competition being held after school Friday, February 7, at Skyview High School.  This is our first year competing in the Math Is Cool competition and we look forward to this new experience. The competition will consist of mental math, an individual test, and several different types of team competitions. (You are not required to participate in the regional competition in order to attend Math Club.)

Rainbow Club

Rainbow Club is a student-led group that meets weekly and provides community, visibility, and support for LGBTQ+ students and allies. Everyone is welcome. Pick up a permission slip from the office if you are interested in joining.

Robotics Club

The Hockinson Middle Robotics Club will utilize VEX Robotics kits and explore the world of engineering, mechanics, coding, and software design. Students will learn physics and mechanics vocabulary and concepts essential for success in their future careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM). Robotics Club will allow students to engage in fun and challenging tasks that will require collaboration with their peers and creativity. Students will build leadership skills through working in teams and strengthen confidence in their ability to approach and successfully solve challenging problems.

Solar Car Club

This is a club for anyone interested in science and the engineering process. You will have the chance to design, test, and improve a model solar car. The objective of this club is to participate in the PUD Solar Car Challenge, where students from districts across Clark County compete in an academic tournament. This tournament includes evaluation of the team's design and engineering processes, understanding of renewable energy principles, and a day-long, multi-heat race of the solar cars (held on the second Saturday in March at Hudson's Bay High School).  This club is new to HMS! Some students might have participated when they were in elementary school. The club here at HMS is open to ANY students who are interested (you do not have to have done it at HHES)!

STEM Ambassadors

STEM Ambassadors is a club that envisions what Engineering projects could be like in the future. Kids gather to design and create things like bridges, bird houses, catapults/trebuchets, dragsters, and rockets and many other projects. It emphasizes safety of tool use in the fabrication lab. They work together in teams to assist in building the created designs.

Spanish Club

Spanish Club  is a student-led, after-school activity in which students can come and enjoy Spanish-speaking cultural activities.
