“Rumors” has it: HHS Theatre Co. wins big!

HHS Theatre Co. poses in Ellensburg

The HHS Theatre Co. brought home its first performance trophy—Excellence in Performance—from the Washington State Thespian Festival!

The cast of HHS's spring play, Neil Simon’s “Rumors,” performed Act 1 in front of the largest audience of the entire weekend and received “superior” scores in 4 of 5 categories: acting transitions, characterization, movement/staging and execution.

“The panel of judges was incredibly impressed with the professionalism demonstrated by the cast, and was ecstatic that that they tackled such a challenging play and rehearsed it in just three weeks,” said HHS Theatre Co. adviser/teacher Greg Saum. The HHS troupe was among 67 high schools that traveled from around the state to Ellensburg for the mid-March event.

Saum emphasized that his theater program is about far more than winning: “My philosophy of theater and acting is that we don’t do it for the applause or the awards, but we do it for the skills and character it builds and the lifetime of memories it creates.”

The “Rumors” cast includes Morgan Berg, Kiki Goin, Riley Hansen, Elliott Holt, Julianne Krane, Ryland Moore, Joey Morguess, Abby Tulp and Eden Achterbosch. They will perform “Rumors” on May 9 and 10 at 7 p.m., and May 11 at 1 and 7 p.m.

Also at the festival, Musse Barclay and Evan Brown each received ribbons of recognition for receiving scores of “excellent” for a solo and a monologue, respectively, at the Southwest Washington individual events competition in October in Olympia.

We are thankful to our community, which, through local levies, helps fund or partially fund many educational and skill-building activities, including theater productions.
